Using an Oculus Rift can take your gameplay to the next level. The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that lets you step into many video games, such as Team Fortress 2. It’s a gaming experience that can’t be beat. When you first receive your Oculus Rift, you need to download some software to configure and calibrate it right away so the headset works for your individual specifications.
Step 1: With the purchase of an Oculus Rift, you will need to download the Software Development Kit. This kit includes a configuration utility that measures your eye orientation and calibrates the Rift so that the sensors will work.
Visit the Developer section of the Rift’s website at developer.oculusvr.com and register. Then you can download the kit from the Downloads page. Make sure you close any running Rift programs before using the kit.
Step 2: Put on your Rift. Click the Measure button next to the label “IPD” when you have opened the configuration utility. This will measure your inter papillary distance (IPD). The utility will give you a number that you can enter into your Viewer Preferences on the Rift. You can test the number by adjusting it a little for the best focus.
Step 3: Calibrate your Rift by pressing the Calibrate button and following the instructions. You will need to rotate your Rift about 360 degrees so the Calibrate bar reaches 100%. If the bar fails to reach 100%, turn off the Rift’s display, turn it back on and try again.
Recap: The Oculus Rift is a great new tool to use for games, but it won’t work as well for you if you don’t configure and calibrate it. Get your best gaming experience by doing that and update the firmware on the Rift if your visual orientation is still off.
