Camera help

Hello,
I have a canon a520 was given to me. It doesnt have a memory card in it and no batteries. I bought the correct batteries AA rechargeable. The green light comes on and when I hold down on/off button it comes on displays Canon in blue screen, then beeps, goes to white screen, but nothing works, then it goes off. I dont know anything about a camera, any ideas what to do?

Get a new camera. Did you ask who gave it to you if it worked?
