I have an old Dell Inspiron 1545. It's a mess and I'd like to know if I can refurbish it and beef it up? All of the articles I've read about building a laptop say to start with a bare bones laptop. I was hoping to save some money and use one I already have.

No, that will not work.

Laptops are soooo specific. Motherboard A will not fit in Case B.
And with that Dell, there are very few things you can change, and the ones you can won't make any major performance difference.
