Can I directly connect a home theatre speaker output to a wireless transmitter/receiver ?

You need to convert speaker level to line level with one of these

so you can use the wireless set up you link to but you will also need an amplifier to power the speakers as Alabalcho says

but you can't use the monitor out (very rare on HT) because it is fixed so the rear speakers would not be adjusted with the main volume control.

You probably can, but you will need another amplifier at the other end of the connection - these units cannon drive your speakers.

Check whether your receiver has line-out connector (sometimes called 'monitor out"), this would be the best place to connect your wireless extender.
