Can I hook my stereo system up to my TV that uses a coaxial connection

Alright, well, I have a ancient TV (One of the fatass ones from the early 90's) and the speakers went out on it but the screen works fine and I dont want to buy a new one. Anyways, I have an old Aiwa stereo that I want to use as speakers. My television service comes from comcast to my TV via coaxial cable. I have 1 White/Red/Yellow connection on the back of the TV and 1 Red/White for Hi-Fi Audio. I tried plugging my stereo in to the Red and White on both the AV connection and Hi-Fi connection and set my Stereo to Aux and the sound dosen't pass through. The opposite end of the Audio wire (Going into the Stereo) is plugged into the Aux Connections. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'd try looking in your tv menu or even for a physical switch somewhere on the back of the tv for audio output selection.

Do you set the speakers for external speakers in the tv menu? If you have that.
