HI, i have the HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j184na Notebook PC and would like to know if its possible to upgrade the laptop from i5 to i7, the CPU is removable, not soldered in, maybe the motherboard/BIOS cannot handle the i7, how about a more powerful i5, if so which please?

Solution
You could definitely upgrade it to a 4th gen 2-core i7 without issue. Just an i5 with a higher clock speed.

A 4-core i7 (4800MQ for instance) is a bit of a gamble. Lots of thinner laptops simply don't have the cooling for it. However, I did it with a Probook and it has no issues keeping it cool.

Yes, you'll need to look for something with a 4xxx M [mobile] (or MQ) designation. HQ chips became soldered in the Haswell generation.
