quick simple question can normal laptop HDD's work in server's with a raid card? or do they need be server grade HDD's my server is a Sun Fire X4150 unsure of the raid card model but the make is Sun same as the server

Solution
yep, you can have raid 1 and raid 0 at the same time, it's called raid 10 (or 01 - for 4 drives it's the same - difference comes in at 6, 8 etc where you need to decide if you split the total capacity or add extra reddundancy). you need 4 drives of the same capacity, you end up with half of the total capacity running at 150-200% of the speed of a single drive. you stripe 2 pairs and mirror them

edit: or look at raid 5 and 6

I have 2 140GB sun HDD's installed with windows server 2012 but I want to put 2 2TB in raid 1 or 2 1TB in raid 0 then another 1 2TB in raid 1 to back up the raid 0 if that's possible
