Can you use a verizon phone if you have an at&t phone

Hello,I have a at&t phone and my friend gave me a verizon phone as a gift. Can I change over to that phone with the same contract with at&t

No you cannot. The Verizon phone uses CDMA technology, while AT&T uses GSM.

basically ATT uses sim cards in every phone, while verizon doesn't.

Well, that is unless it is a "world phone," i.e. a phone with a sim card slot on it as well. I guess it depends on the phone manufacturer with that one. Some phones like Blackberries can go either way, cdma or gsm.
