Knowing nothing about the computer:
it may be that windows needs a driver for either the SATA controller or the drive itself. if windows cannot see the drives what you describe will happen.

the driver tells windows what the device is, how to use it, what it needs, etc. without the driver windows can see something, but it has no idea what it is.

Replace the disk.
