Hello
I am considering buying this Canon G6 or a Olympus 8080.
I am looking for a couple of RAW images from these cameras, preferably
ones that shows a square or rectangle(barrel distortion) and of tree
branches against a blue sky( could show up fringing).
I have Photoshop CS, so I should be able to decode the images.

It's an apples vs oranges comparison. One camera is a compact unit with
a 1/1.8" 7MP CCD, the other is a more all-round one with a 2/3" 8MP CCD.
It's either the Olympus 5060 vs Canon G6 or the Olympus 8080 vs Canon
Pro 1.

By the way, did you check the reviews ? They should give you an idea of
barrel distortion and chromatic aberrations (= purple fringing).

Hello

Thanks for the reply.
Well I have seen no images that give a idea of the barrel distortion.
Fringing I have seen. I also want to see what can be got from processing
the RAW image. If you know of a site that has some RAW images, please
post the location

RAW files for download or processed RAW images ? The former are quite
heavy at 11.4 MB.

Hello
Thanks for the reply.
The sample pictures in the reviews I have seen give no idea of barrel
distortion. There is fringing to varying extents. That is why I would
like a RAW to see what I could do with it in Photoshop CS if that will
open it. I am leaning toward the G6 as it is smaller.

In the 8080 fringing is very moderate, due to the good lens.

Concerning barrel distortion, dpreview tested it and found the
following:

G6
0.9% at wide angle (35mm), 0.3% at the tele end (140mm)

8080
1.1% at wide angle (28 mm), 0.6% at the tele end (140mm)

That you don't see barrel distortion in the samples may be due to the
fact that these are relatively low values and "... it's unlikely that
these levels of lens distortion would be visible in most everyday
shots" as Phil Askey puts it.
