Can't download images to laptop

I have a Canon 500d, which has always worked very well and downloads efficiently to the laptop through the Canon Digital Photo Professional software.

However, the last two occasions I've tried to download (via USB connection and software), it won't let me download the selected images and keeps flashing "busy" on the bottom left toolbar. Can't work out why. The memory card isn't full and nor is the laptop hardrive. The memory card downloaded to a different laptop (w/o Digital photo software), but won't seem to download to the laptop that has the editing software.

Any suggestions appreciated

The camera/SD card will show up as a drive in My computer. Just drag and drop those images into a folder on your computer.
