I have a receiver with options for either 6 or 8 ohms. I want to hook up a 12" car sub to it. Can I use the 6 ohm option without hurting my receiver, and do I HAVE to crossover or can I just hook it straight up

Solution
You don't say what impedance the car sub is?
If it's 6 ohms or higher than it is safe to connect it by itself to one channel of the amp. It will not work correctly this way since it requires a crossover. You can check with parts-express.com for summing passive crossovers that might work with it. Without a way to adjust the woofer level it may not match the levels of your other speakers.
