Choose a laptop for an older child to code with

My 11 year old has has two brief coding classes and I want to encourage his interest by getting him a laptop he can code with for Christmas. Any recommendations? What requirements would I be looking for?

Get something that WON'T play games very good, otherwise he will probably use it to game. An entry software development system doesn't require anything very special. Maybe even buy a used laptop and put a Linux distro on it. Easy to run a web server and do web development that way. Maybe even look at the requirements for an android emulator environment.
