Hello, i would say i'm pretty familiar with desktops and the parts of them but when it comes to laptops i feel lost...i know what i want in it but i don't know much else...What im looking for is a good reliable laptop that can be used for gaming..

The stats i want are:
Dedicated video card
HD Resoultion around 1920x1080p would be ideal
750+ GB HDD
6GB ram
Windows 7 (nothing fancy)
Backlit Keyboard (don't ask gf wants it)
Built in HD webcam
preferably i5 quad core processor and above.

Spending limit is somewhere from 700-1000. preferably below 1000 (but i know you don't cheap out on these things)

Looking for some sites and help as to what brands to avoid what ones to go for and even links to sites would be awesome thank you for your help!

battery life isnt that important either.

You can get a Y580 (what I chose). They have the fastest gpu (660m) in the budget and an ivy bridge i7.
http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/y-series/y580/
Their prices vary on a weekly basis. I got a 720p screen and 1TB HDD a few weeks ago for $850 + tax. They were selling the 1TB and 1080p for $970 at the time. I'd recommend you go for the 500GB HDD though. It is a lot quicker.

For the price I paid I have no complaints.

If you are going to use it for primarily gaming then this one should be ok, hp is supposedly not that bad and the radeon 7730m with an a8 or a10 is a decent gaming solution.

Acer isnt that great, but not horrible and this model is pretty powerful

Just as a short note, to get a quad core in a mobile intel processor you have to get an i7 AND look for the "QM" designation. Mobilie i3's and i5's are all dual cores, as well as i7's without the QM at the end.

My preference for purchasing is www.newegg.com, but I would also look at sager and xotic PC.

What types of games are you looking at playing? If you are thinking of high end stuff like BF3 @1080p your budget will need to be in the ~1500.00 range. If older stuff or you don't mind playing at lower resolutions you should be o.k.

I would recommend this as a baseline: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246629

Note that it only has a 720p screen and a cooling pad is a must as they are known to have some heat issues while gaming.

People are posting laptops like the one above this post for $400 more than the Y580 and they have the exact same specs. If you get one of those it is the best value out there of current laptops. Currently $999.99 buys you one with a 1.6in 1080 screen, 8 gigs 1600 speed ram, 500 gb 7200rpm hard drive (smaller size than you want but much faster, I guess you'd have to use an external also) an i7 3610QM and the 660m GPU which is very capable.
