When you see people enter things like "www.tomshardware.com" in the google search box I begin to see Googles reasoning. I hate to say it but alot of computer users don't use the URL bar at all but just enter the url into Google or bing.

I could see having the URL bar auto-hide so it only shows up if you hover your mouse up there. If they can make it work, I'm all for less UI.

either they'll have to have a hot key (like google desktop's ctrl+ctrl) to open a modal type omnibar or the browser will just take note when you start typing (maybe a string of three or more consecutive keystrokes?) and automatically search/open in current window or new tab?

oh, for the f11 commenter, tabs aren't visible in that view, i don't think.

definitely important that this be an option lest they drive too many folks away.

I find this driving, relentless pursuit of vertical space funny. It means modern screens (those 16:9 "HD LCD" 768p ones) are too short for what people want to use them for. As much as I don't like Apple, they at least have (mostly) maintained 16:10 high DPI screens.

I can't wait to see some schmuck try to put a 21:9 "Cinema Widescreen" into a laptop. Portrait orientation 1200x1920 ftw.

Not sure the only thing i want is an address bar at the top thats it... i don't even care about tabs. I miss my good old IE 6 all it had was a nice browser window and an address bar IE 9 is close but wastes to much space on the top.. even when i shrink the size of the bars in the windows customization

It's why I use Opera. They actually make changes you want.

You have to wonder why Google would change anything, anyway, outside of the normal upgrades, and copying Opera. They are gaining market share constantly, there's no point in doing something stupid that could stop that. Just keep copying Opera; no one notices because Opera only has 2%, and no one cares anyway, as long as they like it.

Thanks God we have Opera, the most innovative web browser out there, light weight, secure, fast and now with extensions. I have been using it since 2004 and never looked back! Opera Link, perfect download manager, perfect shortcuts and perfect utility while not bloated with stuff we wont use.

People should try Opera, it's rarely adversed but give it a try, the community is great. Running away from the giant Microsoft because they want to monopolize the Internet and going to Chrome doesn't change much, either company wants to monopolize Internet, wherever you go there are Chrome ads.

I've always liked Firefox also but Opera is just so complete I don't feel in need of FF's extensions at all.

I was thinking that if Opera shut down, Chrome would suffer as a result. 😀
