Chrome opens copies of itself?

When I look at Task Manager in Windows 8.1, I see several instances of Chrome open, which from testing I see are apps or extensions. Why is it doing this and is there a way to stop it?

This is normal, and due to how it handles threading. Nothing you can do about it, short of learning to code and modifying it.

This doesn't seem memory efficient, but thank you for the reply. More reason for me to use Firefox.

It's not that bad - very little of the memory has to be duplicated between threads.
