Okay, apparently I am the only one with this problem. I have a turtle beach afterglow lvl 3 that has a built in mic. It has one wire. I have a Acer Gateway NV570 with one jack. Just one, not two. When I plug the one wire into the one jack. Audio comes out my but mic will not work, it will use the built in one.

Well, that is actually very common. It is possible that the singular 3.5mm port you have on the laptop is not an input/output one, which is what is needed for a headset with a mic. It could very well be output only, meaning only a headset will work.

If that is the case, you will need to either get an adapter for your headset/mic combo, to make it work connected to a USB port. Or get a headphone/mic combo that already comes with a USB connector.

The adapter I am referring to is like this one... https://www.amazon.com/LZYCO-External-connector-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B018YV3ALM/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1486193340&sr=8-9&keywords=3.5mm+to+usb+adapter
