I know that firewire is something of the past, but how would you capture video from an old mini DV to a computer that doesn't have a firewire port?

Solution
Are you talking about a laptop or desktop computer? What OS are you running? If you have the room, as was suggested above, buy a firewire card. If all you have is USB ports and no room to add a firewire card then you will need a capture device that has a firewire port on it. If the camcorder did not record in HDV then you could get a capture card without a firewire port and use the analog out cable to connect to a capture device. Knowing the make and model of the camcorder would help.

The simplest solution would be to grab a Firewire Hub to plug into your computer. I found a could of used ones on Amazon for under $20...

Another option that could be even cheaper would be to find an older Creative Soundblaster Audio Card for your computer.. I remember those used to come with built in Firewire ports that no one ever used...

A third alternative... would be to go to Craigslist and checking to see if someone is currently selling a Firewire Hub or Card for cheap.
