Computer doesnt recgnize only mic in headphone/mic jack

The problem is that i recently bought a mic and i wanted to plug it in my laptop so i got a divider( not shure if thats the name for it , its a cable that splits headphone/microphone jack into 2 separate jacks , one is for the mic and the other is for the headphones ) and even with this the computer wont recognize the mic.. when i go to recording devices i cant find the new mic option! please help!

headphones im not quite sure .. a friend gave them to me because they were his

because ie already had this problem before when i was trying to connect my guitar to the computer using the same method

from user manual does not seams you could use both in the same tmies they talk about a mic or amplifies headphones you will have to check in windows interface for the settings of this .
