Connect Polaroid HDMI DVD player to Aquos LC-32DH57E

I am trying to connect a new Polaroid DVD player to an old Sharpe TV which has a Sky box connected to HDMI1. The original player had a scart connection which worked fine however attempts to connect the player via HDMI and even with an HDMI/scart convertor have failed, indicating "NO signal". I have tested the player on my Samsung which immediately accepts the HDMI connection.There doesn't seem to be an easy way of allocating the correct HDMI port. Is the TV too old? Would I be better to return the player and get one offering a scart connection. Please help.

Please clarify.

You have an a Sharpe TV.
This TV has HDMI port? Any other connection types?
what all connection types does this DVD player possess?
i.e. - Scart (RCA/Antenna) - Composite (yellow/red/white) - Component (Red/Blue/Green/Red/White)
