will a bluetooth 4.0 audio receiver connected to an older non-bluetooth audio system (Bose) give improved (anything approaching full HD quality) sound over non-bluetooth speakers

If audio quality is what matters to you, the codex used is more important, on order of codex quality:

APTx (allows uncompressed signal), AAC (like 256 kbps compressed I hear), SBC (default).

Both ends has to support the same codex.
