Connecting laptop(hdmi) to TV(vga)

I have an Asus N552VW-FY082T laptop. I have recently bought a hdmi to vga adapter so I can watch movies on my TV, or show ppt presentation on projector. It doens't want to recognise that there is monitor connected. Anyone have any idea can I make it work and how?

Hello.

Does your HDMI port work by itself when connected to a TV? If not, your issue lies with the software or video card.

If it does connect when directly in HDMI, then your HDMI to VGA adapter is most probably defective. These HDMI to VGA converters need a power source: Is the DC supply correctly connected and is there any lights on the converter?
