Connecting my tv audio to LG blu Ray surround sound system

I have an RCA flat screen TV and an LG Blu-Ray 3D 6830 and I can get the sound to work with a movie playing but why can't I get the surround sound speaker to work when I'm just watching regular tv?

You will need a optical cable that runs from the back of the surround sound to the tv. When you watch cable make sure you are on the input you put the optical. Or 2, if the surround sound has hdmi switching go hdmi out of the receiver to the tv then connect hdmi from cable box into the receiver. Example: hdmi 1 cable, bd/dvd surround sound. Hope this helps.
