Connecting new LG TV to an old Onkyo Receiver

I hooked up an optic cable from my new LG TV to my old Onkyo receiver (it does not have HDMI) and I'm not getting any sound. On the receiver, I have 3 optic inputs, 1, 2, and 3 and I'm assuming they mean video 1, 2, and 3. I have tried all 3 and on the TV settings I selected External speaker (optical/HDMI ARC) but did not have any success. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I do have my dishnetwork connected to the TV with an HDMI cable if that makes any difference.

I should mention that the model for the TV is 55LB6300 and the model number for the receiver is HT-R520.

Thank you!

It is possible that the optical inputs are tied to some other input selection. DVD, CD, LaserDisc all had optical outputs before TV. You should find your owner's manual and verify how to access the optical inputs.

Thank you getochkn! This helped and I now have sound...it is going in and out, so I'm wondering if I have a loose cable, but at least I got sound! :)
