Connecting older Sony DVD/receiver to new 65" LG tv

I have an older Sony DVD/receiver combo that I want to use with my new 65" LG tv. The model number of the Sony is DAV-HDX576WF. When I tried using the old red and white audio cables, but don't get that option when selecting the audio out on the tv. I would appreciate ideas.

I suspect that your new TV doesn't have analog audio outputs and you tried connecting the cables to an audio input.
Fortunately your HTS has an optical audio input and your TV an optical audio output. That will give you digital surround sound which it much better than the analog surround you would have gotten with the RCA connection. All you need is a toslink optical audio cable.
Check the TV manual for how to activate the optical output and set it to surround sound.

I tried an optical audio cable, but when I select this as the sound out option, I get silence. Any other ideas?
