Connecting receiver without pass through

I have:
LG tv with 3 HDMI connections
Onkyo TX-NR545 (that does not have pass through that I can find.
Xbox
Direct TV
And a Porta HDMI switcher

I would like to:
Use the TV with or without the receiver
Have the TV automatically switch between options without having to switch them back and forth (the HDMI switcher does this beautifully now by giving priority in order of connection but I can't figure out how to add the receiver to this mix)

Your challenge:
Tell this audio newbie how to make this work per the above. Impossible? Need to purchase a new cable or connector or magic wand? Help and I will be forever in your audio debt!!

Your devices go to the TV, TV audio out goes to the reciever. If you want to use the TV without the receiver you'd need to set the TV to use the internal speakers in the options.

Some TVs will not pass surround sound only 2 channel so check that in the TV audio set up menu. If it doesn't you can replace the switcher with one like this that extracts the audio.

I looked at your receivers specs, and it is an advanced design. I think a device connected first to the receiver via a HDMI input and then to your TV thru the HDMI output will allow the signal to reach the TV when the receiver is powered on standby (It still needs to be plugged it.). There is one stipulation to it. The device that you want to use was the last HDMI connected device that was used. That is to say that if the device that was last connected to the TV using the receiver was a cable/satellite box, then if you turn the receiver off, the cable/satellite box will still function and get its output to your TV. You will just have to control sound thru the TV. But it will not work if the last HDMI input was a DVD on a different HDMI input, and you turn your receiver off and then try to use the cable/satellite box. The easy test is to start watching something connected via a HDMI cable going thru the receiver and then turning off the receiver. The picture should go black for a few seconds, but then the picture will return. You would then start using the TV's speakers.

I have an older Onkyo TX-SR608 that allows me to do this. I am sure that your sill too.
