Constant noise while trying to record

Hello,
i am trying to record music on my laptop. my recording level meters show constant activity when nothing is being played. the computer is grounded and it is not anything i have plugged in because i have unpluggedeverything even the power cable. has anyone ran across this before? this is driving me crazy. i have no more idas. can anyone help? thanks.

That's because the microphone is inside of your laptop and it's hearing fans and HDD activity. If you want to record music, you'll have to get a separate high quality microphone.

thanks for the reply. im not recording live music so to speak, im running a single cable into the mic inut to the computer from an e drum kit i dont understand hom an nternal mic would affect a digital signal. could you go a little deeper. im just not understanding that concept. thanks for your time

Oh I see. Make sure that there are no electromagnetic interference present (like mobile phone) nearby or turned on WiFi. That cable in analog also, not digital.

If you're connecting a line level output to a microphone input (designed for low level signal) it's most likely overdriving the input. Connect to the Line In jack instead.

If you are using windows, right click the speaker icon on your task bar and go to recording devices. Then select the input that has your audio cable plugged in. Make sure there is no microphone boost and you can also adjust the volume of the input.
