Dear forum,

I made a backup of windows 7 a few years ago. Now i'm running windows 10 on a new computer and I would like to install this backup in Virtualbox so I can check my old files. This windows backup file is in .VHDX format but Virtualbox only runs VHD files.
I searched a lot on the internet and heard that maybe I could do the trick with Powershell.
Or maybe via Virtualboxmanage( this link: https://devhacksandgoodies.wordpress.com/2014/08/07/vhdx-to-vhd-on-windows-7-using-virtualbox-manager/)

But I don't know how I do that??

After a while I stumbled on software called V2V Converter.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlgXv6ptVFw) But I could only get this program when I have a company.
I'm 17 years old and I don't happen to own a company as you would most likely understand.
I've send them an e-mail but I don't think that they will respond :(

I also found the following posts: http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1190475-how-do-i-convert-a-vhdx-to-vhd-file/ & http://serverfault.com/questions/567283/convert-hyper-v-vhdx-file-for-import-into-vhd-file-for-xenserver-import
But sadly I don't understand how they did it...

Could you guys help me out?

Thanks in advance!

Install the Hyper-V feature/role on your Windows 10 machine. Within Hyper-V manager, hit "edit" disk, select your .vhdx file, then convert it to .vhd, and voila.

This is all done through a wizard, so you don't have to use PowerShell.

Hello saywhut,

Thank you for your fast answer!

I enabled Hyper-V manager with these steps: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/schadinio/2010/07/09/installing-hyper-v-manager-on-windows-7/
and rebooted.
Then I succesfully converted the file to a .vhd file. But I couldn't run virtualbox with Hyper-V enabled so I turned it off again. I rebooted and my virtual machines do work but when I added the now called vhd backup file wrom my windows 7 I get an error message: "fatal int18 boot failure"

So I can't boot the virtual machine.
Do you also know how to fix this issue or is it just me doing something wrong? Should do something with Hyper-V again?

Not an answer, but I am in the same fix. However, Hyper-V is not available for Windows 10 home, and V2V isn't working because I am retired and don't have a corporate email! I have tried to used the command prompt and powershell, but I keep getting an error on the path entry--invalid parameter.
I backed up my files with Windows 10, but cannot restore the file to my new hard drive because it has a different structure it seems, different volumes or something. Tried VirtualBox, but that didn't work either. Tried to boot from windows 10 boot disk and restore to my backup drive, but Windows restore can't find the backup in the external drive...I have been working on this for 3 days now. All my documents are on that backup! Appreciate any help.

Ah, great to hear that i'm not the only one with this problem.
I'm really busy with school at the moment so I don't have much time too find out a solution for this problem. If you found one in the meantime could you let me know?

There has to be someone who manages to get this working :p
