Corrupt word document! Text replaced with numbers

My friends saved her word document and reopened it. The text on each each page has been replaced by its respective page number. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Some malevalent macro that does a search and replace using the page number maybe....

What is the source of the Word application? New, old, has it worked before?

Any chance of malware or virus? I would scan and isolate the system.

Is it just that one document or multiple documents?

Can the document be opened with a simple text editor such as Notepad?

Can you open the document and set the format to reveal the hidden control characters and formating codes?

Any older, backup copies? AV scan before copying them into the system.
