Seriously? I was not going to comment on this article until I read your post. You, Sir, are an a$$.

A lot of people are bashing this woman and calling her moronic, stupid and an idiot. But I am sure there are thousands of ways you can die that you guys don't even know about. So stop writing these things about this woman. She was trying to win something for her children and died because of it. It is apparent she did not know the dangers, otherwise I am sure she would not have done the contest.

[citation][nom]tayb[/nom]Stupidity isn't be rewarding, it's being punished. You can't expect middle aged housewives to know the dangers of water intoxication. In fact you can't expect MOST people to know the dangers of water intoxication because it seems like such an odd thing. You can't live without water. I guarantee whoever decided to host this competition was made aware of how dangerous it was on multiple occasions but decided to ignore it because they couldn't think of a better idea. The person at fault is NOT the mother but whoever decided it was okay to have such a competition. This is actually a lawsuit I 100% completely agree with.[/citation]

the problem is that rewarding ridiculous amounts of money infact comes back to hurt us working people and we pay for it. wether the company or it's insurance payed it, these companies and/or its investors will get their money back by many different ways. (like raising prices of goods and services or laying off workers or not awarding pay raises. One way or another the rich will get their money back from the masses.

Likewise, I hope you enjoy the selfishness, ignorance, and inanity inherent in needlessly forcing other human beings to exist.

P.S. *truly, *children. Looks like your genes suck -- enjoy.

Sorry i agree with this suit. Well from how it sounds. All contestants should be warned of potential hazards. Not everybody knows that water can kill. Really how often do you hear water is a bad thing. This sounds like a simple case of ignorance, and nobody decided to educate her of the risks. Now this is all under the assumption she was not informed.

IF she was informed of the risks, then she's still not stupid for doing the contest people do contests all the time that can kill you. Mainly sports.. people have been known to die in football, nascar..etc yet it's so rare people still do it. But they shouldn't have won the lawsuit.

I get the fact that most people may not have known holding in your urine could kill you, but common sense went out the window with this mother who would not listen to her body wanting to expel its waste.

On top of that many previous posts mentioned that people were calling in warning about the dangers of water intoxification so even the excuse of not knowing is out the window.

That being said a $16.5mil award is ridiculous! I think the mother and the radio station were both negligent. The award should have been $5mil against the radio station to the family and $3mil against the dead mother to a charity. The remaining $2mil the family has left would be split into a trust fund for her kids with a much smaller portion to be given to the father as a supplement to any loss of income the family incurred due to the mother's death assuming she was financially supporting the family in some way.

No, a sad way to die is to be hit by a drunk driver on your way home from work... that is sad. Drinking yourself to death for a video game console is not sad, it's just comical.

[citation][nom]deadlockedworld[/nom]This is a stupid settlement. Its not their fault that holding it in killed her... (although any smart company would have made her sign a waiver) This is the problem with the American judicial system--penalties like this should only be awarded when a company knowingly endangers customers--not for this completely accidental death crap.[/citation]

Reading the articles above, the DJs DID know that drinking too much water can be deadly, and even joked about it. Think about that Deadlocked; the DJs did know that water intoxication can occur. But "Yeah, they signed releases, so we're not responsible. We're OK." That's the problem with making comments before you even research the story itself.

Not really. Her kids now have 16.5 million dollars to live off of. If they are smart and handle it well, they won't have to do more than they want to for the rest of their life.

They lost their mom though, which sucks.

Damn they are not that great....I would say the family has a platinum jewel encrusted wii console hooked up to hd projector with a 20 ft screen and still have 16.4 after wards...

I remember here, in Moscow, Russia, there were the contest to win a Porsche Boxter. Participants had to stick to the car with their lips. The winner was kissing the Porsche for 54 hours!

The stupid thing is there was no need to make this competition dangerous - all they had to do was to get contestants to drink one pint of water and let nature take its course..

Saying that, it is kind of a ridiculous thing to do, I'm surpirsed especially in america with the lawers circling above constantly that more heed wasnt taken to the warnings.

[citation][nom]precariousgray[/nom]People who have three children are not very intelligent or well-informed.[/citation]

Are you serious? Ive got three children, I'm a trauma surgeon, my wife is a medical doctor - you can pretty much assume we're not unintelligent.

As for uninformed - think about this - for every couple on the planet - they need to have two children for the population to be sustained assuming life expectancy isn't rapidly extending (and in western countries it isnt). And that's assuming that all these children meet the average life expectancy - unfortunately a fair number of children die before adolescence and a significant number of adults die before living out their life expectancy, and a further proportion will either choose or be forced into not having children at all - therefore in order to sustain a population the average couple will need to have MORE than three kids - i'm just doing my part.

[citation][nom]reconspartan[/nom]Why is stupidity rewarded?[/citation]
This is America. That's how we roll. We award large sums of money to really stupid people and blame someone else. Remember the McDonald's case? There's also that guy that blamed the fast food industry for him being fat. If you're going to eat cheeseburgers everyday of your life for 40 years, what the hell do you think is going to happen? These 10 people shouldn't have lost their jobs because someone was a complete idiot, but that's just my opinion.
