Hi all

Just got an iPaq 1940 with the standard charger, cables, etc

Not knowing much about these, I see references to 'cradles' in the
newsgroups.

Are these for 'convenience only' or do they offer some functions not
available via the USB cable ?

Thanks in advance for any comments

I use an iPAQ 2210. At home with a cradle and at work with a cable. Can't
find a difference in use. The cable charges while connected. The cradle
charges to but here is a separate connector. The cradle is more stable while
the cable is less expensive.

plus the cradle props the device up at a convenient angle ;-)

....and I suppose that the cradle looks good on the desk ??

Don't think that I will worry about the angle of the device, besides, it is
called a HANDheld.

Anyway, thanks to all for your insight.

Seems to me that it is simply an extra expensive paperweight that I actually
don't need.

Just needed to make sure as I recall the time that I decided not to buy a
car charger for my laptop ( years ago ) and learned to regret the decision
later when I needed one and they were no longer available.

Regards
Dave

Not sure about the 1900 models, but both my 2210 and 4155 cradles allow me
to charge a spare battery.

The cradle (FA112A#AC3) for he 19XX series is fairly close to the 22XX, 41XX
& 43XX and does let you have a second battery. I thought that I would be
using the alot for my 4355, but that 1560 maH battery really ends up lasting
a long time, kinda surprised me the first few times.

An alternative if you don't have a car charger is an inverter, which coverts
12volts DC from the cigarette lighter outlet into mains voltage and
frequency for use with your normal home/office charger. A 100 watt
iinverter will cost about 30 or 40 $US

Thanks Johno

I did, eventually, end up buying an invertor and am able to charge the cell
phone, PPC and laptop all at the same time.

Dave

Well, the cradle allows you to easily dock, recharge and sync your
handheld without having to worry about plugging a cable in and out as
well as being neater on a desk if you have a fixed setup.

The 19xx cradle also allows you to recharge a spare battery in addition
to the actual unit simultaneously.

You have to watch it though. They sometimes cause distortion in your
stereo. At least it did when I was on AUX using my pioneer deck.
