[citation][nom]njalterio[/nom]DOCSIS and FiOS are way faster than the 3G service available on cell phones. What don't you understand?[/citation]

i think what he meant was that they are two different segments of the market so why are you comparing them.

Because they do essentially the same thing - get me access to the internet.

3G is slow. See the gizmodo article on 3G network speeds

If you are lucky you will get 1.5 mbps in a major city. Considering non-mobile internet service comes standard at 10 mbps and is widely available (especially if you have wireless N) I see no reason to fork over $30 a month for 3G service.

If you completely axe mobile phone plans altogether by using VoIP services you can save yourself a boatload of money and have more functionality than the latest smart phone.

[citation][nom]corranthrn[/nom]RE: njalterio Please stop comparing technologies like they're equivalent. You sound increasingly ignorant.[/citation]

Oh really? Then please enlighten me as to how different they are that I cannot compare them. I can't believe you would insult a person like that on a forum over internet service of all things. How petty.

You might not, but some people do leave their home from time to time. Your home wifi covers maybe 1/4 of a square mile, whereas 3g covers thousands of square miles. Pr square mile 3g is extremely cheap compared to DOCSIS. Is that a bs comparison? Yes, but that's the point people are trying to make to you.

And I'm trying to make the point that public wifi connections are everywhere, and therefore I don't need 3G especially since it is much slower. Sure, if you live in a more rural area wifi will definitely be harder to find, but so is getting a decent 3G connection.

Of course I leave my home. I go to work, which has wifi . I go to my friends or family's houses, and they have wifi. When I go out there are all sorts of stores, coffee shops, restaurants that provide wifi, for free. If you have a wireless N radio it is hard not to get a connection.

In my experience wifi is much more accessible than 3G. That's all I wanted to say. If that's not the case for you then that's fine also, but don't down rate and insult me because I figured out a way that to do something that works better for me.
