Creating a bootable USB drive for a netbook.

Hello all. I have finally been asked by a friend to work on a netbook without a CD-ROM. I keep getting the famous irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD and I suspect it is either her RAM or HD. Normally I run memtest or spinrite to determine what the problem is but I dont know how to get either of these programs to boot from a USB drive. I have the BIOS set to boot from the USB drive but nothing happens. Any tips or tutorials you can suggest to help me out? Thanks in advance!

What type of USB driver are you trying to boot? External hard drive? USB thumb drive?
Know which drivers you'll need to include?

Ideally what I would like is something like a boot loader that would ask me which program I want to boot off of the drive. Similar to when you have multiple OSs and can boot from your choosing at start-up. I would like to create a boot-able Flash drive with Spinrite and Memtest for now. Adding any other down the road that I might need.
