D704 color smear

The famous CLV color smear issue that many have noticed on the
D703/D704/Elite 79/Elite 99 players does seem to be based on the monitor
that's being used.
I have a 27 inch Proscan set that smears like nuts using these
players.
As a test, I hooked up my D703 to my 30 inch widescreen CRT HD Philips
tv and tested for smear. No smear at all.
On disc one of the Star Wars Special Edition box set, I like to use
the scene where Leah bends over and puts a disc into R2D2.
On my analog Proscan set, her hand smears right across the screen. Zero
smearing on the digital Philips set.
So, this does seem to indicate that it's in the processing of the
signal itself, via the monitor used, that causes the CLV color smear
issue.

That's odd that a higher end model would do that. I have the somewhat
dinky(compared to some other players) Pioneer LD-V2200 industrial, and
I've never seen a smear of any sort. The biggest problem it seems to have
is chroma noise.

That chroma noise can get VERY bad on my 27" Zenith CRT television. (w/ 3D
comb filter)

However, when I play the same discs on my 65" Mitsubishi diamond series
widescreen rear-projection TV there is essentially NO chroma noise at all,
and the picture is for all practical purposes as sharp as a DVD!

This kind of stuff really does seem to be television-dependent!

probably partially.... my 704 has smear problems on my panasonic tv-set,
however my 2 other players (2950 and 925 PAL/NTSC) don't smear at all.

Just a theory : Somehow the signal of the 704 seems to weak leading to
smear? I also have some 'smear' alike issues when the signal of my cable-tv
is too weak (eg. when there atmosferic conditions over The Channel with the
BBC signals...... I live in The Netherlands).

To test this theory : Is there a way to 'boost' the signal of the 704??

I prefer the 925 slightly more for it's sharper picture for both NTSC and
PAL (compared to the 2950).. I use the 704 for NTSC discs.

The 704/703/79/99/S9 are all different designs that the other players. They
are designed to try to get a higher level of sharpness. I agree something
in that design causes smearing. It does vary depending on which TV/Monitor
you connect it to. I have tried experiments but have not found a cure. My
cable does this and I see it with Video Tape also. By boosting the signal
the TV's AGC resizes the signal after input to the spec limits. I've
adjusted 704's to the spec and they still do it. I can tell you if you do
not have your black level properly adjusted on you TV the problem will be
worse if the TV's black level is too high. One big selling factor for the
HLD-X9 is that it has a sharp picture but NO smear. You can then of course
go to the Panasonic LX-900U and it has a sharp picture with NO smear but it
has more chroma noise.

In theory the white to dark transition should be quicker and smoother so
this would not happen.

Suddenly, Roy sprang forth and uttered these pithy words:

Hi Roy!

If you don't mind, how does the CLD-925 compare to the 704 (on the same
NTSC disc)?

Thanks

Aaron

Mhhh .... difficult...
The 704 has less picture noise (but smearing issues...in my case only
mildly) so I use the 704 for NTSC discs... also to minimize wear-and-tear on
the CLD925.
The 925 has sharper picture but slightly more picture noise.
The 2950 can be compared with a 703 (no Ac-3) with perhaps slightly softer
picture (it is my backup and I haven't seen it playing for years now so I
can't remember 100%).

BUT....if my 704 breaks down I will never buy a 704 again. If my 925 breaks
down I will try to find another 925 again.....I guess that that says enough
:)

To be complete:
I bought a 704 (here in the Netherlands very difficult to find) under the
impression I was buying a very good machine ("the best non elite player
Pioneer made").... just to find out that the 925 (and even 2950) were doing
the same good job.
So far the urban legend that the best European players (2950/925) were on
the same level as the US midrange players.
Fact: The best european players are on the same level as the best US players
(but with PAL capabilities and without smearing :) ).

Have fun,
Roy

I would say this depends on what type of television you're watching on.

Hi
In terms of my own i prefer the 925 for ntsc discs
and the 2950 for Pal
I agree the 925 has a sharper picture and if I have a good
pal disc it goes in the 925.
I do however find that most pal discs seem to have more noise than their
ntsc counterparts,I have quite a few on pal and ntsc(sad me)and I always
prefer
the ntsc ones, even though the the line structure shows a bit.
Therefore i prefer for them the 2950 which has a softer picture but seems to
have less
noise as well
