Hi,
I finally got my hands on the Japanese import Pioneer CLD-R7G.
I have been comparing it to my HLD-X9 for color smear.
My favorite scene to compare, when using my analog Proscan tv set, is
disc one from the Star Wars Special Edition box set. The CLV disc one,
during the scene where Leah bends over and puts a disc into R2D2.
On Pioneer CLD D703/704/Elite 79/Elite 99, her hand smears, badly,
right across the screen.
No smearing on the R7G during this scene. In fact, I just got finished
double checking the scene on my X9. The non-smear factor seems identical
to me.
So, to my reckoning, we can add the CLD-R7G to the list of
non-smearing CLV players for analog tv sets.
(As I noted in an earlier post, the D704 smear issue disappears when
that player is hooked to my digital HD Philips CRT tube set.)

I think i reported two years ago (when smearing was heavily discussed
on that NG) that when i compared X9 to S9 to R7G, with one identical
disc running in each machine (Eraserhead), i had smear levels of X9 <=
R7G << S9 . My display is an analog HDTV.

I agree with Nicolas's smear findings. The R7G is next to the X9 in that
smearing is not seen. The R7G mainboard is based on the CLD-D604/CLD-59 but
the final video processing after the Memory D/A processing is centered
around the NEC adaptive filter which does output a sharper picture than the
606/59 provide. This NEC adaptive filter looked better to me than the one
in the CLD-99. With the Filter and DVNR "OFF" I feel the 704/99/S9/X9 has a
more stable video processing (if you discard the white smear) but once you
start using the filter and DVNR it starts to even out.

If I could not afford the S9 or X9 and wanted an adaptive filter for the
S-Video output then I'd buy the R7G over the CLD-99.

This is just my opinion and I've only seen one R7G in action. I still feel
the best unit for a HDTV is the X9, for an analog TV I still prefer the
CLD-97.
