Data disappeared, then reappeared

I have a Dell Vostro laptop. When I started it up, all my data (docs, photos, etc.) all disappeared. Even my Outlook emails and account info was gone. I restarted the laptop and everything came back.

I have all my stuff backed up, but this is a work laptop and I'm afraid of it happening again. I was thinking about just reformatting it, but I also wanted to know what the problem is, whether it be a virus or just a technical mishap.

Did you get any messages about your profile not being loaded properly? Only time this can happen is if Windows has an issue loading your profile, and loads a temp one, but it tells you that when you log in.
