Hey Community

So I decided yesterday that I thought a 970M 3GB Laptop would provide the required gaming power I would need. I currently have a desktop (i7-2700K / HD6970 2GB x2 CF / 1080p Gaming) and as my laptop died this would be a good interum buy for $2000 AUD until I upgraded my PC Q4 2018 especially as im travelling overseas for Exchange 6-8months from Jan 2017

However I found that there have been several PC releases with 1060 6GB GPU's that are similar prices especially in Australia from small time boutique sellers: metabox

The main advice I need is, whilst i know the 1060 6GB is approximately 50-60% more powerful than the 970M 3GB. Should I save $350 - 500 and purchase the 970M (which means Ill probably upgrade my Desktop Q1 2018) or should I get the 1060 and then give myself another year or so till 2018/19.

These are the laptops ive decided on

If METABOX (they have very good reviews) is the way to go (They use CLEVO Frames/Base Builds), I can also go for the 17.3" variant which is $2417 although I dont know if $120 is worth the larger screen / Both have G-Sync

If anyone could provide some feedback, thoughts, Ideas that would be helpful, anything else!

For gaming, I'd go with a 17" screen, if you use the laptop often for normal uses, 17" is a bit too large to carry places all the time.

For the card, it's up to you if the cost is worth it. If I had a gaming desktop, I would not even spend money on a laptop with a 970M, but get a 960M one and play on lower settings. If you do plan on gaming a lot on the system, the extra money on the 1060 is worth it, a 970M is getting to the end of useful life for good results for gaming on higher settings.

I think ill go with the 1060, its mainly as a replacement for the next year or two until I have to upgrade my Desktop (which is quite broken atm), plus ill be overseas for 60% of 2017 So i need a laptop

If im travelling / exchange do u reckon the 17" is worth $120 or 15.6" is reasonable enough, they both have G-Sync

Nessy, not sure how pricing and availability is around you, I often see UK buyers buying a laptop 1 generation old because UK sites don't get the new ones in fast enough. However atm buying a 9xxm laptop is not advised as far as a gaming laptop goes. The prices simply haven't come down and when the low end 1060 trounces a 980m, it is silly to bother with them now.

umm you are smoking some drugs, or something, the 980 is far better than the 1060 the 980 can play games in 4k while the 1060 chokes, lets face it the 1070 is like the 980. Simply the truth and you lying to people about performance doesnt help yes the 1060 beats a 970 desktop but its not better than the 980.

Check your forum.. this is notebook graphics. I specifically am talking about the 980m which is a good chunk less powerful then the 980gtx. :)

Yeah well even on laptop forums people talk about desktop gpu so specify lol. But the 1060 in laptops is actually same chip as desktops but believe it or not has better clock speeds. So technically shouldn't perform any different with a good cpu.

For gaming it makes no difference screen size wise I prefer the smaller. 17.3 inch laptops are huge and a rock. So be prepared to have issues moving around if you want to be portable.
