Decoding DTS with a new Sony ES receiver?

Has anyone had any difficulty decoding the DTS datastream from a
laserdisc, with a newer receiver? I just purchased a Sony STR-DA1000ES
receiver for my bedroom and keep getting a decoding error when I try to
play DTS laserdiscs. The hookups are definitely correct. To double
check the laserdisc player and the digital optical cable, I hooked them
up to my Sony 555ES receiver (about 5 years old) and it decoded the DTS
stream without a problem. I am trying to determine if there is a
problem with the receiver or if the new receiver is simply not
compatible with laserdisc DTS due to generational changes. The DTS
decoder in the receiver is decoding the stream from my DVD player, so
it is not a case of the DTS decoder totally not working. Any help is
greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mike

I, too, have a newer SONY receiver that doesn't always decode an LD's
DTS signal when I first turn the player on and insert a DTS LD into it.
I found that I have to put a digital (PCM) LD into the player FIRST,
and then eject it, and then put in the DTS LD. It works fine after I
do this. I don't know why I have to "prime the pump" like this when I
want to watch a DTS LD, but I do.

After playing around a bit, I have figured out how to get it to decode
laserdisc DTS. I initially moved the digital optical cable (the one
out of the laserdisc player) to the TV/SAT input on the receiver
(previously had it in the DVD input) and it decoded the DTS. Then
moved it to the MD/DAT input and got the decoder error. Moved it back
to the DVD input and got the decoder error. Then moved it back to the
TV/SAT input and it decoded fine. So, of the 3 digital inputs on the
back of the receiver, it would only decode in one of them which I
thought was very strange. After doing some further reading of the
manual, I found there was a setting in the menu called "DEC" which
changes the priority order of different data streams. Choices are
"auto" or "pcm." Sure enough, the TV/SAT factory setting is auto. The
DVD and MD/DAT factory settings are pcm. Once the other two were
changed to "AUTO," they all decode the laserdisc dts now.

Is it doing so on every DTS disc you own?
Is the receiver handling correctly other audio tracks from your laserdisc
player (Analog stereo, DD stereo, AC3 etc...)?

It seems unlikely that it's a 'generational' change as the DTS standard has
not been altered at all (added to, but not altered). Since it's a brand new
receiver the best suggestion would be a call to your nearest SONY service
center, it could very well be a software bug on this particular receiver.

That's great to hear, it always takes a bit of time to come to grips with
any equipment and the myriad setup options.

cheers and happy viewing
