Dell Inspiron 4100 sound problem

I've got a stock 4100 with XP Home Edition. Sound device is reported as
crystal WDM audio. All works fine except the sound, whether through the
laptop speakers or with earphones. There's sound but with a heavy
scratchy static in the background, making it not usable. Tech support
has decided that it's not hardware related and can only suggest a
reinstall of XP. I'm hoping there's a more specific solution than a
reinstall. Tips would be welcome.

It was a matter of muting the phone in line. Took out the static,
probably from my wireless card.
