Dell inspiron 600m will power on but wont start windows

Hello,
My ex gave my son an old dell inspiron 600m it was working fine until today it will turn on but gives a warning that the computer was not shut down right or had a power failure and gives choices of safe mode etc but when I click on those it does nothing. What can I do??

Either Windows is corrupt or there's a bad sector on the hard drive -- more likely the former. You need the Windows XP(?) disc in order to restart the computer from the CD drive and attempt to repair (or re-install) Windows.
