Dell inspiron mini 1011 won't log in

my dell inspiron mini 1011, will turn on fine, but once i click on a username to log in, it goes to the background screen, and doesnt go any further, there is nothing on the screen only a the background image, i have no idea what to do from here, please help.

ctrl+alt+del to start task manager
file>new task (run...)>type in "explorer.exe" without qoutes>ok

I suspect explorer.exe is not started properly.
