Dell PC to HP monitor not working

we recently purchased a refurbished Dell computer. I hookked up everything to our existing monitor, an HP, and nothing happens. It is connected with a VGA cable and it scans but doesn't see it and the monitor goes right to sleep so I can't do anything on the computer. Help!

Is your monitor set to the correct input? If you have multiple inputs, it might be set to a different one currently (HDMI, DVI, etcetc).

Same wiring as with previous PC so settings must match. Ports for vga and dvi with only vga in use.
