Dell Studio XPS 16 strange problem

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell studio XPS 16 1640. My current problem is a very strange one, my display just goes black after a while and that's it. The only time it starts again is when insert the VGA cable from another monitor.
Then it works for a while and then BAM!!! BSOD and the display goes black again.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem. (sadly i don't any warranty left)

Try booting in safe mode, this will exclude any driver issue. If this happens in safe mode too it is likely a hardware failure. In case of a hardware failure I would blame the gpu which could be replaceable if not soldered to the mainboard.

But first thing first, try safe mode or, even better, a live linux distribution to exclude a software problem then let me know and we'll try to fix it.

I am from Dell. Try the following steps and let me know if the issue is fixed:
1. Try hitting the F8 key when you see the Dell Logo on the startup. Once you see the advanced boot menu select safe mode.
2. If the computer stays on in the safe mode. Try downloading and install the latest drivers for the graphics card in your machine from the following link.
