[citation][nom]mykem[/nom]Imagine the barrier to startups... "gee I now have to calculate changing sales tax for 50 states?" Imagine all the time and effort that gets wasted in software development on this stupid proposal.[/citation]

45 states actually. Last i checked anyways. Besides even crappy POS software is more then capable of calculating tax for you. The time and effort is already put into the software. Doubt a lot will change there.

[citation][nom]hoofhearted[/nom]This is crap. If they really want to implement a fair tax, the implement a flat tax on income. Everyone pays 10%. Doesn't get much simpler than that. That needs to be be done before brick and mortars have any credibility in the "fair" complaint.[/citation]

Flat tax would "over tax" to many rich republicans so figure out who's 100% against it :/ Personally I'm all for the flat tax. But that just has to do with the federal tax not state or state sales tax.

[citation][nom]daniel123244[/nom]I thought tax was made up in that thing called shipping?[/citation]

Your joking right? who's going to pay UPS if the shipping is suppose to be the tax?

Honestly i thought people that lived in states that had a sales tax still had to pay it when shopping online as well. If not i really don't see the issue with people who chose to vote for and live in states that have a sales tax pay the tax they voted for. I don't live in a state with a sales tax but still i doubt it would change any of my shopping habits.

Some people here say the government is trying to make you pay more tax's. it seems more to me they are going to enforce the tax's you should already be paying. Though I'm sure a states sales tax should be enforced by the state.

[citation][nom]ChaobSiroc[/nom]This is how the Democrats plan on stimulating our economy... by taxing us even more. Notice how the republican's haven't been pushing for this crap. "Out-of-state companies that aren't paying their fair share of taxes are sticking Illinois residents and businesses with the tab."How out of touch is this idiot? It's not the companies who pay the sales tax it's you and I, their CUSTOMERS.[/citation]

you have to be the biggest idiot on this site , or you just haven't followed this story much , MOST the people backing this legislation are republicans you art-tard.

now toa dress teh general article , the reason why i'm apposed toi this legislation myself , is because the products are already taxed by thier state (paid for buy the company that is selling ), for that matter it has been this way with catalouge retailers that don't "double" tax buyers for decades as well , so now that we have huge internet sales , and a bunch of whiney a-- corperations with money to sling at politicians they all of a sudden think double taxing is fair. you know i say f--- em, let them tax internet in teh end it wont slow internet sales any to be turthful , walmart , target , kmart and best buys days are still numbered just because the internet stil offers soemthing that neither of those companies can , convienance and saved money on gas. perhaps this isnt a big issue with cities , but most of the US is rural and with gas cost going up people will still save more money shoping on the internet than they will driving from place to place to shop. where i'm at it's terrible on gas cos i'm 30 miles from every big town or city around , so what if i have to start payin a buck or two more on web purchases , it wil still beat the 30-40 + dollars a trip to town would cost me in gas.

[citation][nom]Maxor127[/nom]I'd rather pay a tiny bit extra in taxes each year than cut programs that help a lot of people. And of course, tax the hell out of the wealthy. The main problem is corporations have too many loopholes to avoid taxes. Was it GE that paid no taxes this year? That's f'ed up.[/citation]

How can you tax the wealthy more. When the IRS extorts all of the tax money the top 10% of the people in the USA pay 40% of all tax money collected! It's not a matter of we should tax people making more than you, we should all be taxed the same percentage. I can't fault GE I didn't owe any taxes last year either. I got every dime back. I'm not rich I make around $40,000/year. I used the system to my advantage like they did.

If we all got behind this http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer and stopped the don't tax me tax him because he makes more crap, we would all be in a better place.

I think this is a good idea. The amount of revenue taken away from the states via online shopping has to be crazy in some states. Everyone used to shop at their local store, now they buy most of their christmas presents online.

I'm so sick of people complaining everytime someone mentions tax. You don't get out of debt by not making more money. We're going to have to pay more.

Different country - but I'm personally against the way online retailers can avoid UK VAT by shipping everything via Jersey etc. The cost base of an online retailer ought to be significantly lower than that of a physical shop and therefore why should they get a 20% advantage in pricing over those physical shops, craziness.
Would any of your US comments be different if the choice is between paying $20 for something to a Barbados company (including let's say $0 paid in US tax) against paying $20.50 to a US company (whether or not in the same state and paying say $5 in US tax), or harmonising the taxes charged to each? I imagine that's not a realistic current position but just as comparison; the chances are the online sales will not pass all price savings on to the customer anyway.

It's a cash grab, plain and simple.

Anybody who claims that this helps the phantom "main street" mom and pop shops is at best delusional, and probably criminally insane. Walmart has been destroying your mom and pops with their brick and mortar locations for decades.... and now they are complaining that someone else is undercutting them. Irony of ironies.

This has nothing to do with main street and everything to do with the fact that massive brick and mortar corporations (Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc) are throwing money at politicians to stick it to massive online retail corporations.

Smoke screens and small town rhetoric are fun, though. In the end it just means less money in your pocket, from the poorest poor to the richest rich, and more money for the government to waste on their horribly inefficient and mostly ineffective programs. Yay.

Politicians at their best... never thinking of a concicuences. Did his idiot self think about the companies that will then rather host/form their company/firm outside US and then you will get jack-shit for taxes even more.

Brick and mortar stores have the same ability to have an internet shop, just because they are lazy or do not want to evolve that should not be my problem and affecting anyone else for that matter.

This is the Illinois Senator backing the plays already in process by his party in Illinois. Illinois Treasurer's office is offering an amnesty period for internet sales tax with some bogus AGI calculation of online spending and has already expanded their definition of legal nexus (driving Amazon to eliminate all jobs in Illinois) to chase every tax dollar they can. Fact is, Illinois is borderline bankrupt and led by a level of incompetence and corruption that makes the federal government seem capable. They are desperate for any and all tax dollars they can get and are getting their boy in Washington to open up a new avenue for their greed.

Ralph Nader said it best, tax those who use it most for the greater good of the economy, taxing online sales is no different then if you go somewhere to purchase a product, secondly tax all transactions on the stock market, the influx of cash from a small transaction tax roughly .4% would amount to huge sums of money for the government. But what am I thinking Wall Street would have a cow if there was a tax imposed on them......

@onikagei

Nice theory, until you realize that those "huge sums of money" from your small tax on "Wall Street" is also huge sums of money that are no longer in the pockets of private citizens. A good portion of money traded on Wall Street is the retirement (and other) savings of the middle class (and even some forward thinking poor people).

If you think the government would do a better job pushing that money around than the middle class retirees it belongs to then you obviously haven't spent much time looking at the history of government expenditure.

I'm actually all for sales taxes if they are applied correctly.

If the online company is required to collect taxes for everyone based on the customer's address, that becomes a nightmare to manage. There are literally thousand of different tax districts (state/country/city) across the US. A least a couple of them are likely to change every month, good luck keeping up to date with all of that.

Conversely, if the company was supposed to collect taxes based on the company's location, then this will create tax wars by different areas trying to lure company's with low taxes. Many company's would end up moving to cut down their prices by up to 10%.

Personally, I think that either the country needs to come up with a single sales tax (not likely) or taxes need to be collected at the post office on pickup (similar to the duty on international packages).

On second thought, you know what a better idea is? Get rid of sales taxes altogether. Increase income taxes proportionately. I have 2 problems with sales taxes. They have way too much overhead administrative cost and, as a consumptive tax, they favor the wealthy and hurt the poor.

How about instead of charging online sales tax, eliminate the main street sales tax?
That's fair, right?

Currently the wealthy pay a higher tax percentage than the poor. So a flat tax actually benefits the wealthy.
