Well it's nic eand noble for DICE to say this now, but they're really no better. When Battlefield 2 came out, they released extra maps but charged you money for them and called them "booster packs." No one bought them, and the people who did buy them were left with a bunch of maps that servers didn't support. Not to mention when the first Bad Company came out, and they tried charging extra money for unlocks but the huge negative backlash caused them to change their mind. And let's not forget Battlefield 2142...
But to their credit, they've finally released the booster packs for free (after 4 years) as well as a couple other free maps included in patches. Which means it's no longer difficult finding a server hosting those maps.
So yeah, DICE is far from altruistic. They're just putting on their marketing spin to try to gain the favor and support of people crying about Infinity Ward.
