I have AVG free, I downloaded something and turned out to be a torjan horse, high risk. AVG has deleted it/handled it, but has it actually completely removed it from my PC? I would like to know if I should still be alert on this.
yes. if it detected it, it removed it. AVG is the best "virus removal" antivirus out there. No other anti-virus is as effective as AVG at removing bugs. (detecting them is another issue... there are definitely better virus detection suites... like AVAST! or Malwarebytes)

I see. Oh, then I have a feeling I've got a virus on my PC by now... Is Norton a better choice? I've used that in the past.
By the way, this is true for the AVG FREE edition?
yes. avg free edition is insanely effective.
No... norton and mcaffee haven't been top tier virus removals since AOL was relevant... with free virus checkers like AVG, Malwarebytes and Avast! all proving more effective.
