Did I just think of something awesome? Tegra k1 possibilities...

So I have been searching around for a device that can Skype while I am away at work seven days at a time but still be able to play steam games. Anything worth a damn seems to start near $800+ dollars for a 1080p display with decent graphics card.

But, I started searching. I think I may have come up with an idea. Ive found out that its possible to install unbuntu on Chromebooks but has anyone tried to do so on the new Tegra K1 acer chromebook?

Would a $350 chromebook w/tegra k1 + Ubuntu + Steam = decent CSGO performance? Ive searched everywhere and found nothing close to what I am looking for.

Or what about a tegra k1 android tablet? Nexus 9 with ubuntu?

Is this possible or can some one try it and shed some light?

Sorry matey. It's a very cool idea, I'll grant you that, but it's something the requires support on the software side. If somebody wrote good drivers for the K1 (which they might have, I have no idea), it might well be able to play games. Certainly not at 1080p and decent settings, but trying to get that for $300 just isn't possible, sadly.

Look at machines that use amd's APUs -- that's probably the cheapest option for something that can do light gaming.

The question you're looking for is this:

Does any distro of linux have driver support for the Tegra K1 chip?

That being said, I strongly doubt that you would get very good gaming performance with this setup. When it comes down to it, you're still trying to run a desktop game on mobile hardware.

The minimum requirements for Windows 7 are modest by today's standards: 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor. 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit) 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) -- just for the OS, not applications or data files.

That's a cool website, but I just checked and can't seem to find any mobile parts... mostly because actual computer games don't run on mobile parts like the K1 chip.

Again, this is a part found in android tablets and the nvidia shield. It's very, very unlikely to have even the most rudimentary driver support on an open source platform like Linux; Windows 7 is an absolute joke...

It seems you two have destroyed my idea. I thought I had it all figured out. Just want to be able to game on a rather cheap machine while away from home. Something to most def play CSGo and if possible Arma 3. But thats gonna cost a whole lot. haha well I tried

You cant do that but you may have laptops like Asus x205ta ,Hp stream 11 ,Hp stream 13 ,Hp stream 14.Which run on windows but they dont have pretty much fast processors. But at least you will be able to do more gaming on them instead of chromebook.
