Digital Cable box problems

I've just had installed a General Instrument digital cable decoder box. My
RTV 5040 has all workable functions: play, pause, return to live, etc. All,
that is, EXCEPT the ability to record! I get a "no video signal detected"
error. I also cannot receive any program listings on the RTV.

The cable comes in from the wall to the ANT IN connector on the cable box.
From there it goes to the ANT IN on the RTV. I have gone to SETUP/NETWORK
INPUTS and correctly selected all the appropriate settings.

I've tried unplugging the unit, rebooting it, everything I can think of.
Still, no luck. I've also scoured the AVS forums for solutions. Many other
people seem to have the same problem, but no one seems to have a real
solution.

Can anybody here help me?

The RF input has the WORST quality. Use something else if possible.
Anyway, you should try all the output (from the cable box) and input
(to the Replay) combinations.

Also, try different connections to help locate the problem. Does the
cable box work connected directly to the TV?

You say you get the "no video detected" message. Are you sure you're
selecting the proper input? Does the line from the cable box actually
have video on it? See above. A little experimentation helps a lot.

>I've tried unplugging the unit, rebooting it, everything I can think of.

That ought to include checking the cable box other than through the
Replay.

As far as the guide is concerned, that's a different problem. What
have you done to try to get it? Note that the Replay asks you to enter
your ZIP code. Did you do that right? What choices did you make in the
menu? Since you're using the RF input, what does it say is connected
to it? Did you allow the Replay to connect after making that setting?
What did it do?

Answering these questions can help for find out what what;s wrong.

Have you set the RTV tuner to channel 3? Try using the A/V input instead
of the RF.

Yes, I have just tried that. Still nothing in the program guide and no
recording capability. The channels are all listed, but no info.

The channel guide data comes from the ethernet or dialup connection -
not through the cable box. Is the internet connection working? Have you
paid the activation fee yet? If you hook the cable directly to the input
rather than through the cable box does that make a difference?

Yes, the internet connection is OK. My IVS settings are OK. I've been a
RTV customer for nearly a year and my account is paid into February.
Everything was working just fine before the digital cable box was installed
(by an Insight Communication tech).

My only problem is the RTV does not recognize the signal from the digital
box.

Make sure the volume control on the cable box is set to maximum. Don't
know if that'll help but is could cause poor sound if not set properly.
Is the IR blaster working OK? Try setting the RTV to channel 4 too. If
all that fails, reboot the unit by holding the power button in for about
20 seconds with the ethernet cable UNPLUGGED. Then plug the cable back
in and do the setup again.

The digital box has no volume control. No problem there. I did your
suggestion about rebooting with the ehternet cable UNplugged and reran the
setup. Nothing has changed.

I suspect I may be returning the digital cable box. I enjoy RTV too much to
let the extra device get in it's way!

If the cable box is plugeed into the TV directly do you get a picture?
