Do I need to go through the internet to play dvd on a Sony bluray using a smart tv.

Tv asks to hook to the internet and I am already using the four device connections allowed.

No you dont need internet connection. The Blu-ray player probably wants to connect to the internet so you play the "extras" on the drive.

The internet connection on the BD player is used for updates to the firmware. If the firmware is not up to date some discs won't play. You can connect the player to the net periodically to check for updates.
