Does free software put viruses on my computer after a short time of using?

I was told by an online company that cleans my computer that I should take off ALL free software programs because they will put viruses on my system after a short while of using them. I find this very suspicious and pretty ludicrous especially when they wanted to charge me to put paid versions on. This was a lifetime license instead of just a yearly one but the reason I don't pay is I couldn't afford all the programs get for free. I check every free program that I put on my system to make sure that it gets good reviews.
